Adventure Medics Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course
Learn online. Train in-person. Certified in 5 days on-site.
The Adventure Medics Hybrid WFR combines flexible online coursework with the hands-on, experiential training that wilderness medicine demands. This hybrid wilderness first responder course is designed for busy professionals and outdoor enthusiasts who need scheduling flexibility without compromising the field-based education.
Complete 30-40 hours of foundational coursework on your own schedule, then join us for 5 intensive days of WFR skills training — half the in-person time of a traditional wilderness first responder course.
What to Expect from Your Adventure Medics Hybrid WFR Course:
Phase 1: Online Learning (Self-Paced)
You’ll begin by completing online modules, hosted by FoamFrat, including foundational wilderness medicine content on an online platform. You’ll need to finish these modules before the in-person portion begins.
Phase 2: In-Person Skills Intensive (5 Days)
Apply what you’ve studied through hands-on practice and realistic scenarios in outdoor settings in beautiful Sedona, AZ. With foundational knowledge already mastered, every minute of in-person time focuses on firsthand practical skills training and clinical decision-making within a backcountry context. These competencies can only be developed through experiential education.
Upon Completion: Hybrid WFR Certification
Once you have completed all online and in-person coursework and passed the written and practical exams at the conclusion of your course, you will receive your WFR certification. With the knowledge and experience gained through this course, you will be able to conduct a thorough physical exam, obtain a patient history, assess vital signs, provide emergency care in the wilderness, and make crucial evacuation decisions.
Who is the Hybrid WFR for?
If you work or recreate in the outdoors or in other austere environments where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable, acquiring your WFR certification is highly recommended.
Whether you are a professional guide, trip leader, search and rescue team member, outdoor recreationist, or international traveler, this course is for you.
The Adventure Medics Hybrid WFR is ideal for those who:
- Have limited time off work and can’t commit to 10 consecutive in-person days
- Need flexibility in when and where you complete coursework
- Prefer self-paced learning for academic content
- Want to maximize hands-on training during the in-person portion
- Learn well through independent study combined with instructor-led practice
The Adventure Medics Hybrid Wilderness First Responder course gives you the flexibility you want from an online WFR without gutting the experiential training that makes the certification worth earning.
The outdoor portions of training take place regardless of weather, so come prepared for wet, muddy, cold, or hot environments!
