Adventure Medics Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course

Train in-person. Certified in 9 days on-site. Here is our WFR Outline.

The Adventure Medics WFR combines rigorous coursework with the hands-on, experiential training that wilderness medicine demands. This wilderness first responder course is designed for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts who want focused, field-based education without compromise.

You’ll spend 9 intensive days on-site building the knowledge, skills, and decision-making ability required to manage medical emergencies in remote environments.

WFR with Adventure Medics What to Expect from Your Adventure Medics In-Person WFR Course

Over 9 consecutive days, you’ll move from foundational classroom content into progressive hands-on skills practice and realistic scenario-based training in outdoor settings. Every day emphasizes practical application, clinical decision-making, and the realities of providing care when help is delayed or unavailable. These competencies can only be developed through immersive, instructor-led experiential education.

Upon Completion: WFR Certification + AHA CPR-AED Heartsaver & EPI Certifications

Once you have completed all coursework and passed the written and practical exams at the conclusion of the course, you will receive your Wilderness First Responder certification along with AHA CPR-AED Heartsaver and Epinephrine certifications. With the knowledge and experience gained, you will be able to conduct a thorough physical exam, obtain a patient history, assess vital signs, provide emergency care in the wilderness, and make crucial evacuation decisions.

Course standards and reciprocity with WMEC schools

Adventure Medics’ WFR meets and exceeds the Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) standards (minimum 70 total hours with at least 45 in-person). Our course is a full 80 hours, taught entirely in person.

Because we meet these widely recognized industry standards, graduates are positioned for reciprocity with other programs that follow the same guidelines. If you hold a current WFR from another provider and want to confirm eligibility, email us a photo of your card before registering.

Adventure Medics is the certifying body for this course, and we are members of the Wilderness Medical Society — the professional body for wilderness medicine practitioners, whose clinical practice guidelines our curriculum follows.

Who is the WFR for?

If you work or recreate in the outdoors or in other austere environments where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable, acquiring your WFR certification is highly recommended.

Whether you are a professional guide, trip leader, search and rescue team member, outdoor recreationist, or international traveler, this course is for you.

The Adventure Medics Wilderness First Responder course is ideal for those who:

  • Want the full immersive experience of a traditional 9-day in-person WFR
  • Prefer learning skills and decision-making through direct instructor feedback and realistic field scenarios
  • Value the depth that comes from consecutive days of focused practice rather than fragmented training

The outdoor portions of training take place regardless of weather, so come prepared for wet, muddy, cold, or hot environments.
